The Portuguese writer Eça de Queiros (1845-1900), who worked for the embassy in London, uses a refreshing simile for ‘green’. 

… eyes green as the pastures of Erin.  

Enjoy too this verdant quote by Edmund de Waal, or by Patrick Leigh Fermor, ‘alert petrifaction’ in green.  Or Seamus Heaney using green to describe ripening writing.
