From the opening line of Ted Hughes superb ‘Warriors of the North’, presaging an icy and violent arrival, ‘bringing their envy’.  You can see their salt-crusted hair and frozen pale eyes, impervious to pity.

Bringing their frozen swords, their salt-bleached eyes, their salt-bleached hair,

The snow’s stupefied anvils in rows,

Bringing their envy.

Enjoy Hughes’ own recital here, and Seamus Heaney’s resonant analysis in his Finders Keepers prose anthology.
