‘… waited for loach or beetle or shrimp or elver or troutling.’
Ever wondered what the term is for a young eel? Now you know. An elver or yelver to add to the cubs, kittens, puppies and ducklings with which you are already familiar. And the troutlings.
The OED mentions an elver-cake, apparently some kind of cake made of baby eels, which at first glance doesn’t make me run for the recipe book.
