Dorothy Wordsworth refers to ‘flowering and marking’, meaning to embroider identification signs on linen.  I recently bought some wonderful, secondhand and fine quality bedlinen, with flowers and monograms beautifully embroidered along the top edge of what appear to be trousseau items.
