I’ve made or used one of these dozens of times but never knew what it was called. A shim is a washer or a thin strip of material used to align something, or make it fit, or reduce wear. To shim means to use such a piece of material to fill a gap, as when you wedge a piece of card beneath a table leg to stop it wobbling.
